Link Taggart, who is now fourth assistant general foreman of the PL outfit, was shaking hands with his numerous friends in this burg during the week. Link says a report had gained currency in the Piceance country that Jimmy Buchan was killed in the Cripple Creek region some time ago, but its is thought here that there is a mistake regarding them after. The last heard of the gentle Jeems, he was in Phoenix, Ariz., where he was alive and well and kicking because the climate down there wasn’t near as fine as that of Meeker—viewed from a bald-headed man’s standpoint.

The next big investigation will be that the people undertake to find out why the Republican majority isn’t keeping at least 10% of its promises of good legislation. When that inquiry comes it is pretty certain that some distinguished gentlemen will be convicted in the court of public opinion of having obtained office under false pretenses.

Clarence Lamb, one of the old time cattlemen in these parts, is at the Meeker hotel this week, seriously ill. His many friends hope he will be on his feet again in a week or so.

As we go to press a report comes in that Mr. Lamb is dead.

Betty Crocker homemaker test given here. High school senior girls here will join more than 600,000 others in over 15,000 schools throughout the country Tuesday, Dec. 2, in an only-one-of-its-kind examination. At stake in the written homemaking knowledge and attitude test of the 16th annual Betty Crocker search for the American Homemaker of tomorrow are $110,000 in college scholarships.

A 1949 Ford truck, loaded with dirt, careening down 7th street Saturday afternoon without brakes, struck a westbound vehicle at the intersection of Hill Street and traveled 2 more blocks before overturning at the corner of 7th and Garfield. The driver of the truck, James A. (Jim) Burt, 70, died at the scene of the accident of internal injuries.

Meeker’s Lisa Sprod has been chosen to participate in the Colorado coaches of girls sports/Spalding all-state volleyball games. Sprod, a 5’7” senior standout for the Cowgirls, will play in the 3A game this Saturday, Nov. 20 beginning at 1 p.m. at Niwot High School in Niwot.

Monday night’s report from Craig Police dispatch that two suspects in the shooting death of Hinsdale County Sheriff Roger Coursey were seen in Craig and headed toward Meeker sparked extraordinary precautions by local law authorities.

Rangely city council Monday night approved the purchase of a 1970 police cruiser for delivery after the first of the year. All members were present for the regular meeting.

Fifteen Thanksgiving turkeys will be given away Saturday afternoon again this week by the Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce.

To save both our civilization and our democracy, we must shift our young people’s loyalty from the anarchistic civil disobedience of Thoreau back to Socrates’ unshakeable commitment to law—in our case, the law of the majority.

Landfill fees concern commissioners. The state of Colorado has doubled the fee from $500 to $100 per landfill. This means a charge of $2,000 for the county.
