125 years ago

A handsome headstone will mark the final resting place, in Highland cemetery, of the late Johnny Gebhardt. The marble memento was purchased by the brother of the deceased after his late visit to Meeker, and as soon as the different parts arrive will be placed in position at the head of Johnny’s grave.

The expected snowstorm put in its appearance Wednesday, and the downfall of the “beautiful” continued through that day and all of Thursday. Over 20 inches fell in the valley, and much more in the high places. It was the heaviest snow for this season of the year, in the recollection of “ye oldest inhabitant.”

Fred Burke of Piceance, was a business visitor to the county seat, last Friday. Mr. Burke reports that a much-needed school has been opened on lower Piceance and has a large attendance. This will give the children on the lower end of the creek school advantages which has been lacking for a long time past.

Herbert Bacon of Grand Junction Saturday was elected president of the First National Bank of the Rockies.

Visit your schools … and many parents did … Education Week.

Christmas tree cutting time is here again. This coming Sunday, Meeker Lions Club members, Boy Scouts and other interested individuals will venture forth out into the hills through knee deep snow to bring the trees into town to sell during the coming weeks.

The Upper Colorado Environmental Plant Center of Meeker was one of 34 nonprofits from around the state honored for their outstanding accomplishments at the sixth annual Awards for Excellent luncheon in Colorado Springs.

A lot is riding on grant requests for Rio Blanco County governments. Another shortfall in the budget this year for Rio Blanco County, Meeker and Rangely has prompted the three governmental entities in seeking a state Energy Impact Assistance Grant through the Department of Local Affairs.

Roger V. Albi, MD, opened private offices in the Rangely District Hospital on Nov. 24 and will be practicing medicine here in Rangely.

Have a pleasant Thanksgiving. The skating pond in Hildenbrandt park is filled for those who enjoy this sport.

There’s little chance for people to get together as long as most of us want to be in the back of the church, the front of the bus and the middle of the road.

Many of you are aware that Rangely District Hospital lost the services of two of our three resident doctors early this summer. Judging from recent articles that we read in both Colorado and national publications, and our own discussion with other rural hospitals, our experiences is not unique.

Rangely bakers, start your ovens! Christmas bakers are needed to supply goodies or other Christmassy items for the PTSO’s bake sale booth at the Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 3.
