Lady Cowboys 3rd at WREA Shootout

MEEKER | The White River Electric Association (WREA) sponsored the 20th annual Cowboy Shootout last weekend. This annual tournament is two weekends long, last weekend the girls played and in this upcoming weekend, the boys will take to the court.

The eight-team tournament championship game ended with the Moffat County Bulldogs taking home the top trophy after a win over the Longmont Christian Warriors. The Meeker Cowboys placed third behind the Warriors, after a dominating win, 63-33, Saturday in their final game against Soroco.

In the Cowboys’ game on Thursday they took down the Aspen Skiers 50-23, Julia Dinwiddie was the top goal maker followed by Kirsten Brown who also hit two three-pointers. In game two on Friday the Cowboys took to the court against Longmont Christian. With a slow start they found themselves down 0-8 almost immediately. Meeker caught back up for a halftime score of 20-24 the Warriors, then late in the fourth quarter Longmont Christian pulled 10 points ahead and time ran out for Meeker. The final score was 44-35. Sarah Kracht led the team in scoring and Dinwiddie in rebounds.

The all-tournament team selections for 2019 is Ellie Echols and Taylor VanDenberg of Longmont Christian, Kayedence Brunner of Soroco, Halle Hamilton of Moffat County, and Dinwiddie of Meeker. The tournament MVP was Moffat County’s Cayenne King.

In the skills contests, Dinwiddie won the three-point contest and coach Deon Jackson from the Lotus School for Excellence won the coaches’ challenge.

It was a busy week for the Cowboys as Tuesday they hosted Coal Ridge. The final score was 55-31, the team is now 3-1 for the season. Wednesday they traveled to Rifle to take on the Bears, final scores to be updated next week.

The boys’ Cowboy Shootout hosted by WREA is this weekend and the girls will be taking a break. Their next games are at Grand Valley on Dec. 20, they will then be off for Christmas break and traveling to North Park on Jan. 11.
