MEEKER | If you are having cabin fever take a short 10-minute drive up County Road 8 about 3 miles to County Road 6 (Little Beaver Road). Turn left on County Road 6 and go about .6 of a mile to visit the restored Coal Creek School on the left. (If you passed the big red barn you have gone too far.)
The school isn’t open but you can view most of the interior through the eight tall windows and enjoy some spring and Easter decorations in the windows. Take a walk back in history with your family and imagine what it was like to go to that school from 1884-1948. The privy/coal shed has been restored and the horse shed is in the process of being restored. There was never a playground at this school so the children entertained themselves at recess by playing games like baseball, jacks and jump rope.
Take a moment to be quiet and you may see or hear sandhill cranes and other things of nature. On the drive to and from the school watch for the new baby calves and lambs in the fields. Enjoy some history of Rio Blanco County, beautiful scenery and see that the Rio Blanco County economy still is very agricultural. Please remember to respect all property and rules for social distances.
