MEEKER | The Meeker Classic Scholarship is awarded to Meeker High School graduates who continue their education in a two-year trade school, two-year associate degree or four-year college or university. The award is made to students in the second year of their studies. Recipients are awarded based on their community involvement and volunteer activities. The Meeker Classic wants to help build the next generation of volunteers, and believe this scholarship is a small step towards achieving that goal. “Volunteerism helps young people develop skills essential for building strong communities in the future, we are so proud of the youth in our community. We are proud of their efforts toward volunteering and community support,“ say Scholarship Committee members.
2019 Meeker High School graduate, Luis Villalpando, was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Meeker Classic Scholarship. Each year the “Meeker Classic Memorial Scholarship” is dedicated in honor and memory of exemplary individuals that have been involved with the Meeker Classic, but have now passed away. Luis receives his scholarship this year in honor of the late Tom Zulim, Hockley, Texas.
Luis entered Colorado Northeastern Junior College in Sterling as a freshman with half the credits necessary for his degree. He graduated Spring 2020 with an Associate’s Degree in animal science. Luis will be attending Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas, this fall where he will study agricultural engineering and compete on the Rodeo Team.
The Meeker Classic Scholarship Committee reviewed applications from a full roster of highly qualified individuals. Meeker should be proud of these young people that represent our future. Growing up Luis volunteered at the Meeker Classic, his church, served as umpire at youth baseball games and other areas of the community. “The value of volunteerism is huge in my opinion. While volunteering to help the community, you become a better person in so many ways,” says Luis when asked about the value of volunteering.
Luis hopes to use his degree to develop new equipment that helps farmers and ranchers throughout the world. He admires these hardworking people that feed and clothe the world. He will always remain active in his community, giving back and volunteering. The Meeker Classic congratulates Luis and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
