RBC I The changes to fall sports by CHSAA this year means that the cross country is seeing some new faces on the team and some growth, there are currently 19 kids regularly attending practice.
“The numbers are fluctuating a bit,” said assistant coach Kris Casey, “we hope to see a few more join but it is a good group.”
There are five seniors leading the team. Ashdon Seibert is the only one who has competed for four years; the others are Colby Clatterbaugh, Ethan Drake, Spud White and soon Mason Holliday will be back.
Cross country races are limited to 50 participants and there can only be one race a day for boys varsity and one race for girls at any meet, for a total of 100 kids. This year many of the teams across Colorado have seen tremendous growth in participation as kids are wanting to compete in a sport after missing out on spring sports all together. That means that decisions will have to be made on who gets to run and who will stay home. Some of the meets have as many as 10 teams, so each team will only be allowed to bring five boys and five girls.
The Cowboys are currently scheduled to host two meets, the first one this Saturday on the trails above Meeker, it will begin from Sanderson Park at 9 a.m. and will be a triangular with Soroco and Rangely. The regular annual meet is on Aug. 28 but there is some hope that Meeker will be able to host a few more.
