MEEKER | The boys of fall are returning to Starbucks Stadium. The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) voted 12-3 Wednesday evening to let schools make a choice to play football in the fall (Schedule A) or in the winter (Schedule C).
Superintendent of schools Chris Selle decided early Thursday morning to let the Cowboys return to the field in the fall. Practice will begin on Sept. 24 with the first games the weekend of Oct. 8-10. Superintendents have until Monday at 10 a.m. to declare if they are playing or not.
This year’s format, like all of the other sports, has changed.
- Each team will get six regular season games.
- If a team gets into the playoffs that gives them a guaranteed seven games.
- If a team does not make it into the playoffs, then they will schedule a seventh game with another team that also did not make the playoffs.
- CHSAA will be making all of the schedules
- Playoffs will begin Nov. 21
- State championship will be Dec. 5
- The players will remain six feet apart on the sideline and must wear a mask.
- The player’s box has been extended from the 10-yard line to the 10-yard line.
Currently, Meeker, Hotchkiss, and Cedaredge have declared to play. In our league that leaves Paonia, Grand Valley, Gunnison, and Olathe that have not officially declared either way. Roaring Fork, who is new to the league this year, has opted to play during Schedule C.
“The state will be making all schedules this year, they will try to keep Meeker on the Western Slope and from traveling too much,” said Meeker High School Athletic Director Klark Kindler. “I expect that as in years past we will be playing some 2A schools such as Coal Ridge.”
The schedule should be available early next week after the Monday deadline for each school to declare which season they will be playing in.
Information on stand capacity, spectators, and cheerleading has not been released.
