Barone wins county rematch

RBC I In a rematch of county teams, Meeker’s Barone Middle School boys’ basketball teams prevailed.
In the eighth-grade games last Thursday, Meeker’s A team won 28-23 with Jake Boesch scoring 10 points and Dylan Mobley eight. Rangely’s Conner Phelan led all scorers with 13 points.
“Going 11 percent from the (foul) stripe kept this one close,” said BMS coach Neil Joy.
“We played a solid game and really hustled, but we struggled with turnovers and making shots,” said Rangely coach Matt Scoggins.
In the B game, Meeker won 9-8.
“The B team was slightly outnumbered and definitely outsized, but at no point were they out-hustled,” Joy said.
Meeker’s seventh-graders also won, 40-9.
“Meeker’s full-court pressure was too much for us to handle,” coach Quinton Kent said. “They forced us into turnovers throughout the entire game.”
Both county teams traveled on Saturday. Rangely’s eighth-graders lost a close one at Steamboat Springs 29-27.
“This was an exciting game throughout,” Scoggins said.
Again, Connor Phelan led with 10 points, and Trevor Brown and Cameron Enterline had seven and six points, respectively.
Rangely’s eighth-grade B team, however, won 27-18 with Ryan Wilczek scoring 12 points and Dale Nielsen had eight. Rangely’s seventh-graders lost 13-2.
Saturday, Meeker lost all of its games at Craig, except the seventh-grade B team, which won, 11-8.
Matt Frantz had seven points to lead the Cowboys.
“I was impressed with the amount of hustle that all the players gave,” said BMS coach Ben Anderson.
The seventh-grade A team lost, 27-20. Raul Lopez scored 12 points for Meeker.
Meeker’s eighth-grade teams both lost to Craig, with the A team losing 42-25 and the B team falling 14-11.
“These boys got a big reminder of what happens when you don’t play defense,” eighth-grade coach Joy said.
Again, Boesch led the way with 12 points for the A team.
