Franklin receives Meeker Classic memorial scholarship

MEEKER I Each year the Meeker Classic Memorial Scholarship is dedicated in honor and memory of exemplary individuals who have been involved with the Meeker Classic, but have now passed away.  The 2020 Meeker Classic Scholarship is awarded in honor of the late Dan Wood to Meeker High School graduate Kolbi Franklin.

The Meeker Classic Scholarship is awarded to Meeker High School graduates who continue their education in a two-year trade school, two-year associate degree or four-year college or university. The award is made to students in the second year of their studies.

Applicants are awarded based on their community involvement and volunteer activities. The Meeker Classic wants to help build the next generation of volunteers, and we believe this scholarship is a small step towards achieving that goal.

Kolbi Franklin was chosen for the 2020 Meeker Classic Scholarship from a field of highly qualified applicants. Her volunteer efforts distinguish Kolbi as a worthy recipient of the Meeker Classic Scholarship. Kolbi will be a sophomore at Oklahoma State University this fall majoring in agribusiness. An active volunteer while growing up in Meeker, Kolbi learned that giving of yourself can make a difference. While in Meeker High School she helped develop a mentoring program designed to help middle school students prepare for high school both academically and socially. Kolbi also served as a 4-H leader in Rio Blanco County. Active in school, sports, 4-H and so much more, Kolbi also won the senior division in the 2019 Colorado Make it With Wool contest.

Kolbi continues her volunteer efforts in college in Stillwater. She is active in the OSU Block and Bridle Club, Oklahoma Collegiate Cattlewomen, joined a sorority and was awarded the McKnight Scholarship — all while maintaining a 3.7 GPA. As a McKnight Scholar, Kolbi is committed to continuing service and volunteer efforts with the Salvation Army.

“Volunteerism is essential to today’s society. It has always been important, but especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. People all around the nation are in dire need of support during these tough times. In order to keep businesses going, community service is more significant than ever,” Kolbi said. As a freshman in college she volunteered by taking meals to those in quarantine, helping businesses when they were short on employees and writing to those hospitalized or in quarantine.

Kolbi first attended the Meeker Classic as a second grader with the school program. Winning the coloring contest set her off on a life-long love and study of art. She continues to work and promote agriculture and service to others. The Meeker Classic is proud to award the 2020 scholarship to Kolbi and we wish her well in her endeavors.
