The Meeker Herald ~ 125 years ago

• The political millennium will be here when men quit regarding all politicians of their own party as statesmen and all those of the opposition as demagogues.

• Contractor Rourke fired the largest brick kiln ever burned in this town on Wednesday evening. It contains 240,000 bricks which will be used in the Odd Fellows building now in the course of erection.

• After a summer spent in the hills, Paton, the taxidermist, is again in town preparing for a winter’s work at his profession.

The Meeker Herald ~ 100 years ago

• Earl Soper has succeeded Reuben Ball, Jr., as chief clerk at the Meeker hotel. Earl is well qualified to fill the position.

The Meeker Herald ~ 50 years ago

• “It just gets in you and you have to play” says Tom Jirak, one of four members of a local rock group known as “Oracle.” Along with Tom on the guitar, the group includes his brother Jim at the organ, sax and flute, Gary Miller on the drums and Dave Coats at the bass guitar.

• Thurman “Fum” McGraw and Beryl “Brownie” McGraw, the parents of Meeker’s Dave McGraw, are the 1997 Citizens of the West.

• Elsewhere in this issue is news of a powerful FM radio station coming to Meeker. From our standpoint, it’s a good news/bad news proposition. Getting a big 100,000 watt station slated for Meeker means that someone is convinced that Meeker is on the cusp of growth, and is willing to risk big bucks in Meeker’s future.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

Project Rio Blanco is proposed as the third in a series of experiments for stimulating natural gas reserves with nuclear explosives

• A prospective newcomer was in Rangely last week looking for a site on which to build a bowling alley. He looked at several and said he will contact the owners for prices.

Rangely Times ~ 25 years ago

• The idea of a viable bowling alley being built in Rangely came up again. Don Peach, Rangely’s mayor, addressed the board, saying that a small group of residents are looking at building a bowling alley on the Duco lot on Main Street. The bowling alley is currently in proposal stages.

• With the help of area horse enthusiasts, the Bureau of Land Management completed its horse gather operations at the newly built Yellow Creek Corral.
