Meeker Cowboy volleyball secures league championship

MEEKER I Meeker Cowboy volleyball had a successful weekend, beating Grand Valley and two more league opponents and now have only two more league matches to go.

“After two fun and exciting weeks the girls are looking forward to having the weekend off and to get some rest,” commented head coach Greg Cravens.

Grand Valley was the Cowboy pink out night to bring awareness to breast cancer and all cancers.  Meeker High School volleyball partners with Pioneer Medical and decorates the gym.  “The match went well,” said Cravens. “We worked this week on improving offensively and serving a higher percentage as a team and both were accomplished this week.”

Thursday the team traveled to Walden for a matchup that had league championship implications.

“North Park was a good team and they gave us some fits,” said Cravens. “They were very good at defense and didn’t make a lot of errors. We ended up chasing more balls down and improved our out of system play.”

The Cowboys won in three sets, 25-17, 25-16, and 25-9. They only allowed 12 kills and two serving aces.

In another home game, the Cowboys took on the Pirates on Friday.

“Olathe had a good hitter and we needed to be strong at the net,” commented Cravens. “I felt we played very good defense against them and served well. In the tenth game of the year, the Cowboys didn’t allow the opposing team to win a set. They beat Olathe in three 25-14, 25-16, 25-15.

“Overall our offense was better this week,” said Cravens, “We made some adjustments in our line up that gave us a bigger block in some rotations and more options offensively in some rotations and it worked out well this week.”

Meeker will finish off the Western Slope league actions this week at Vail Mountain on Friday and at Caprock on Saturday, but regardless, they have sealed the league championship.

The Cowboys finish the regular season with a tournament in Buena Vista against 3A teams and even a top 10 4A school.  “It should be a lot of fun,” wrapped up Cravens

The number one team in 2A volleyball, Sedgwick County, went from a 15-1 to 15-3 losing two games, number four Wiggins lost and there should be a lot of movement in the polls this week.

See table for combined stats for North Park and Olathe.
