• Political cartoon: “Before the House, 74th Congress: Unemployment, Medical Aid, Old Age Pension, Soldier’s Bonus, Industry, Business.”
• Headline: Rio Blanco County to Build a Court House. “For sometime past there has been considerable agitation for a new court house at this time as it was felt that construction costs were lower than they would be for years to come and also that there was need of the employment that such a building would make at this time.”
• Old Timers to have annual reunion and dance Feb. 1. President J.D. Amick.
• Advertisement: When the Weather is Bad, It Pays to Have Your Own Telephone

Jan. 14, 1960
• School Board sells White River City schoolhouse located 18 miles west of Meeker to W.H. Jacobs for $125.
• Mrs. Artie Parr, fifth-grade teacher, will receive a regular contract at the end of her maternity leave.
• First baby of the new year born at Pioneers Hospital, a little girl, born to Elmer and Beverly McGruder, Jan. 11.
• People in this community were surprised when they read the brief item in last week’s Herald to the effect that the high school building had been declared unsafe. In the opinion of many people the present high school building is safe enough for school purposes. Practically everybody is agreed that the present high school building is not large enough.

Jan. 11, 1990
• For the third time, the Internal Revenue Service will try and collect the back taxes owed to them by selling Malcom Bricklin’s 4,473 acre ranch 25 miles east of Meeker. Numerous liens and mortgage notes have been filed against the ranch.
• Commissioners discussed the problems the county is having with the CBS television signal.
• Meeker librarian Robbie Nickel sold her home to Mr. and Mrs. Mike Frary of Pagosa Springs. Mr. Frary replaces Charlie Richmond as the White River Range Conservationist. Nickel will join her husband in Elko, Nev. at the end of the month.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
Jan. 14, 1960
• Diana McCormick won the 1960 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow contest at Rangely High School.
• A third 70 mph zone was announced Wednesday by Sgt. Bell of the Colorado Highway State Patrol. The new zone is an 11-mile stretch, from Rio Blanco north, toward Meeker, on Colorado 13.
• Funeral services for Charlotte Sults, 14, were held at the Artisia Baptist Church. Sults died in Denver after being ill for two months and hospitalized for treatment of hepatitis. Sult was a freshman at Rangely High School.
• At the Rig Theatre, Rod Steiger as Al Capone; Mark Stevens in Gunsmoke in Tucson; and Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Jan. 10, 1980
• There were no injuries in an explosion of an oil tanker parked at the Don Rook’s Husky Station last Thursday. The explosion occurred during a thawing operation on the vehicle.
• The Colorado Highway State Patrol will be patrolling Colorad’s western slope by air searching exclusively for 55 mph speed limit violators.
• Winners of the 1980 Environmental Poster contest from Rangely were Pamela Martinez and Peggy Castro, second grade; Lori Hall and Kit Kenney, third grade; Kristie Parker, fourth grade; and Darlene Murry, fifth grade.
• County planning meeting agenda: BLM update, Rio Blanco Oil Shale Co. bachelor quarters, subdivisions.

• Kimberly Kay Staley and Derrin Kent Noel are pleased to announced their engagement.
• Rangely High School wrestlers: Travis Lambros, Roger Rowley, David Williams, Ian McDaniels, Clint Aronsen, Jason McAlister, Jarred Porter, James Meraz, Dusti Rose.
• The Dough Mine, donut and sandwich shop.
• Second grade students at Parkview Elementary earned badges of achievement in a Mighty Mouse Math Contest.
• Don Davis was chosen as the chairman of the board of county commissioners.
