Rio Blanco Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 75 years ago
March 21, 1935
• Tagert Hardware Store sponsored a John Deere picture show and lecture in the Baer building next dor to the post office.
• Farm census shows Rio Blanco County unchanged since 1930.
• The neighboring town of Rifle now has a new picture theatre, located two doors down from the Midland hotel.
• Fire broke out at Alex Carstens’ residence in the northeast part of town and caused much damage.

March 17, 1960
• There will be two candidates for mayor and 12 for councilmen in the town election April 5.
• Billy Jordan and Lewis Anderson were chosen from Meeker High for the all-conference team.
• News arrived this week from Durango that the stork had visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dunbar and left them a fine baby boy who weighed in at 9 pounds and 6 ounces and had been named Dale Wade Dunbar.
• One of the heaviest storms of the year struck the White River Valley this past week, leaving about a foot of snow behind.

March 22, 1990
• The school board approved a recommendation to hire Joe Gutierrez for the position of assistant custodian at the high school.
• 150 people enjoyed Saturday’s whitefish festival.
• Several members of the Denver Humane Society and the Wildlife 2000 activist group met Reed Kelley at the front of the Denver Museum of Natural History with placards saying “Fire Reed Kelly!” and carrying paper mache likenesses of Kelley’s head on a platter. The groups were protesting Kelley’s pro-hunting stance of Colorado’s black bear.

• This week marks the third anniversary of the present ownership of the Rangely Times.
• Semi-final eliminations for the annual county spelling contest have been held. Brenda Rich placed first locally.
• Shirley Elaine Smith and Larry Allen Lisonbee were married Sunday evening.
• Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Swanson of Fruita are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Miss Sheryl Ann Swanson, to Gordon F. Byers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Gerry of Rangely.

March 20, 1980
• Candidates for Rangely mayor: William (Bill) Parker, Peggy Rector and Dennis Williams.
• Janet Hollenbaugh and Kent Hejl were united in marriage on Feb. 29, 1980.
• Two Rangely High School cheerleaders were named 1979-80 all-conference: Debbie Clugston (wrestling) and Kim Mann (basketball).

• Happy 39th birthday, Paulette and Paul.
• Rangely Middle School students of the month, Jaime Kelly and Donald Crowther.
• Sam Love announced his candidacy for a county commissioner seat, and Nancy Amick announced her bid for county clerk and recorder.
