A hard goodbye to Pickles: Johnny Rust’s final show at the National Western Stock Show

MEEKER | January marked the end of a chapter for Johnny Rust, a young and dedicated livestock exhibitor, as he completed his NWSS Catch-a-Calf project with his beloved steer, Pickles. For Johnny, this was a big moment—the first time he’d ever shown at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). It was his chance to apply everything he had learned over the past year, thanks to the guidance and support of his family and mentors.

The weekend was a whirlwind of emotions, with Rust’s family and friends all coming together to support him. Grandma cheered from the stands, while his aunt, uncle, and cousins traveled all the way from Oklahoma to help with the show and share in the experience. As a family, it was truly an “all hands on deck” weekend. The support was overwhelming, and for Rust, it wasn’t just about the competition—it was about learning, growth, and making lifelong memories.

As part of his final project, he completed a detailed record book, as well as an interview and speech about his time in the program. On the show floor, he placed third in his showmanship class and sixth in his market class—a solid result that showcased his hard work and dedication. Though Rust didn’t make it across the sale stage, Pickles still earned market price, a fitting end to their time together.

But no amount of ribbons or placements could prepare him for the emotional goodbye that came at the end of the weekend. Surrounded by his family and supporters, Rust said his final farewell to Pickles. With hugs, tears, and heartfelt goodbyes, they sent the steer off, marking the close of a meaningful chapter in Rust’s young life.

“I could not have done it without every single person’s support,” he said, his voice filled with gratitude. “From those who donated to help with travel expenses, to those who spent countless hours helping me prepare—this journey wouldn’t have been possible without all of you.”

As Rust reflects on his first major show experience, it’s clear that this journey with Pickles was about much more than the ribbons. It was about growth, learning, and the incredible support of a community that stood by him every step of the way.

For Rust, it was a hard goodbye, but one filled with pride and gratitude for the lessons learned and the memories made.
