Barone Middle School played twice this past week. On Friday, the A and B teams combined to play one game vs. Soroco.
“It was a great team effort but Meeker eighth grade came up short,” commented coach Claudia Bullen. Final score 22-11.
“The girls are still learning how to play man-to-man defense but continue to improve each week,” said Bullen. “They are also learning new offenses and working hard to effectively utilize them in a game.”
Leading the scorers were Ruth LeBlanc with four, Kayla Castillo with three, Olivia Griffiths with two, and Aurora Stallings and Dawn Arnold each chipped in one point.
On Saturday, the 8B got their first win of the season by beating Craig 20-8. Leading scorers were Lilly Hernandez-Pena with six, Griffiths with five, and Ava Nay with three. Keelan Dade, Sawyer May and Stallings each made a basket.
“The B team did a great job at finding the open person,” commented coach Jen Phelan.
The 8A team played Craig, but did not come out on top, losing 24-13. Castillo led the team with five points, Arnold with four while Dade and Griffiths made two points each.
On Friday, Meeker’s 7th-grade team played as a single unit with 16 girls getting floor time. They walked away with a 12-10 win against Soroco. The lead scorer was Jayci Chintala with four points and Norah Loar, Gracee Gardner, Luci Munger and Sienna Rolen with two points each.
“The seventh grade team had a great day on Saturday,” said Bullen, “with both the A and B teams walking away with a well-earned win after working hard in practice and finding great intensity and hustle in the games.”
7B’s final score was 23-2, led by Gracee Gardner with eight points followed by Braylin Peña with five, Lauryn Shults and Julie Kracht each put up four points, and Abby Quinteros with two.
The 7A team won a nailbiter with a final score of 10-9. Loar, Chintala, Avarie Caulfield and Payton Arnold each had two points and Braylin Peña hit two free throws to keep the Cowboys in the lead.
Next week, the teams travel to a tournament in Steamboat Springs on Saturday.
