MEEKER | The 130-year-old Methodist Church at 809 Park Ave. is now operating as White River Methodist Church, Inc. Same church but with a new name.
The church’s story is rich in history with several entity and name changes through the years. July 10, 1893, the pioneer congregation started out as Methodist Episcopal Church. By the 1950s, the church had evolved into the “Methodist Church,” also known as Meeker Methodist Church and stayed such until 1968 when it became Meeker United Methodist Church (upon the merger of several denominations into one) until July 1, 2023, when it became an independent Methodist Church.
The church just completed a successful vacation Bible school with many children in the community attending and on Aug. 6, they are sponsoring “Church in the Park Community Service,” with everyone invited and all the churches in Meeker welcome to participate! The event includes an outdoor church service with the music provided by The Church at Meeker worship team. There will also be a picnic potluck and baptism in the river.
The summer schedule continues with former pastors, Johnny and Patti Arrington, ministering the next two Sundays, Aug. 13 and 20. Then, Aug. 27 there will be a back-to-school Sunday with a special play performed depicting different parts of the history of the church. Everyone invited.
Today, while this local congregation is not under any denomination, it retains the Wesleyan Methodism tenants of faith and intends to continue the tradition of caring and sharing Jesus with this community.
Pastor Cherie Cobb and the entire congregation at White River Methodist Church, invites you to worship on Sunday at 10 a.m. and to any of the programs of the church, which includes an active Sunday School, Youth Group, Women’s Bible Studies, Men’s Group, and Missions. 970-878-5904; www.wrmethodist.com; [email protected]
