PRESS RELEASE
RBC | Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Governor of the State of Colorado in the 2026 election. Weiser was elected Attorney General in 2018 and reelected in 2022.
AG Weiser issued the following statement: “There are many reasons why I’m running to lead this state I love, but the biggest reason is simple: I’m committed to fighting for the people of Colorado.
As your Attorney General, I’ve spent the last six years taking on big fights for the people of Colorado, standing up against irresponsible companies that harmed consumers, defending our freedoms, improving public safety, and protecting our land, air, and water.
From day one, I’ve met my commitment to you to show up in every county, to listen to you, and to get results. This campaign will focus on engaging with you and having real conversations, to hear what’s on your mind, to learn how our state government can best serve you, and to get your ideas on how we can meet our challenges, together.”
After graduating from law school, Weiser was fortunate to serve as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron R. White and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Following his clerkships, Weiser went on to work as an antitrust lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice.
In 2009, President Barack Obama selected Weiser as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. In 2010, he worked in the White House as a senior advisor for technology and innovation for the National Economic Council.
At the University of Colorado, Weiser became Dean of the Law School, taught constitutional and antitrust law, and founded Silicon Flatirons, a groundbreaking center on law, technology, and entrepreneurship. He also founded successful nonprofits in support of startup businesses across Colorado and was chosen to chair Governor Ritter’s Innovation Council.
In 2018, Weiser ran for office for the first time, and was elected to serve as Attorney General of Colorado. He was reelected in 2022.
Weiser, a first generation American, is the son and grandson of Holocaust survivors. His family immigrated to the United States as refugees after his mother and grandmother were liberated from Buchenwald concentration camp by American soldiers during World War II.
Weiser currently lives in Denver, Colorado with his wife, Dr. Heidi Wald, and two children.
