The Rio Blanco County Board of County Commissioners has released a statement expressing concern over recent actions by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission, stating that several decisions depart from Colorado’s long-standing tradition of science-based wildlife management and the statutory mission established by the General Assembly.
The Board cites the Commission’s July 16–17 decision to reduce the daily bag limit for furbearers to two animals regardless of species, noting that the action differed from recommendations presented by CPW wildlife biologists. The statement also raises concerns about proposals to reduce public comment opportunities, particularly for elected officials representing local communities.
In its statement, the Board reaffirms its support for wildlife management grounded in scientific expertise, transparent decision-making, and balanced consideration of conservation, agriculture, outdoor recreation, private property rights, and the needs of rural communities.
The Rio Blanco County Board of Commissioners also states that future appointments to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission present an opportunity to strengthen public confidence through balanced, transparent, and science-based decision-making.
