Cowboy track takes 3rd and 2nd at RHS meet

MEEKER | The Cowboys traveled to Rangely for the first of two track meets they will have there this year. There were 11 boys teams and 10 girls teams at the event. Meeker boys took third only eight points behind first place and the girls took second.

“We had a really good meet in Rangely this last weekend,” said head coach John Strate. “The number of personal records was exciting to see.”

The vault portion of the meet was Thursday in Meeker. “We could tell Aspen Merrifield was going to have a great meet; she was able to clear 8 feet for the first time. She continued the next day in Rangely with personal bests in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, as well as running great legs in relays,” commented Strate.

Hailey Knowles had a great day in the discus throwing 107 feet.

“That was a huge throw for her,” said Strate, “this was very exciting as she has been working her way back from surgery.”

The boys’ 400-meter relay team of Jeremy Woodward, Porter Hossack, Zach Eskelson and Colby Clatterbaugh won the event on the day, but their time places them nicely in the state overall.

In the 1,600-meter relay, Buzz Clatterbaugh, Woodward, Hossack and C. Clatterbaugh won their relay to cap off the day. This team is also ranked in the state.

Zagar Brown had a personal best in shot by six feet with his throw of 38 feet.

“For the boy vaulters, our two seniors and lone freshman continued their winning ways,” said Strate. “Owen Hanneman also had a great day in the vault and It is great to see one of our newer vaulters have some success.”

The Cowboys had a lot of personal bests not mentioned.

“I wasn’t sure how things would go with the seniors having graduation the next day, and the underclassmen excited to be done with school,” Strate said, adding, “but they all did a great job of staying focused.”

Meeker now hosts the next track meet this Friday at Starbuck Stadium.
