The Cowboys boys basketball team finished the 2022 year with two games over the weekend.
“We did not play well against Vail Christian,” commented head coach Klark Kindler, “everyone, and myself included, need to remember that we are a young team, with just one senior and the rest are juniors.”
The Cowboys fell to Vail Christian 44-37, down 10 with just a couple seconds left, a three pointer brought them within seven.
“We had a hard time making our shots in this game,” said Kindler, “we have changed up our offense and are getting used to it, and this night did not go our way. The gym was a little empty but that was to be expected as both girls basketball and wrestling were out of town.”
Jonathan Fitzgibbons had 11 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Cowboys in both areas. Ryan Sullivan had eight points and Jace Mobley finished with seven.
The next night both the boys and girls played in a foundation game against the Rangely Panthers. Each school can have a total of two foundation games per year. The schools must pay the Colorado High School Sport Association for the games and all the proceeds throughout the year from all the Colorado schools that have foundation games goes toward a scholarship fund. The foundation game was the only way these two teams were going to be able to get together this year with the classification changes.
The boys won the foundation game, unfortunately stats cannot be posted for this game according to CHSAA rules.
“The game was like any other game,” said Kindler, “Rangley did a good job filling the gym and the crowd was fun, both teams played well and we came out on top.”
Winter sports have entered winter break and will not be competing until 2023. Both the boys and girls will be at Baggs, Wyoming playing Little Snake River on January 6.
“Little Snake football has won multiple championships in Wyoming 6A the last couple of years,” commented Kindler, “they are aggressive and we really like to play them.”
