Cowboys break through for 13-3 win over Basalt behind balanced attack

MEEKER |  The Meeker High School baseball team rebounded with a dominant offensive showing Thursday, rolling past Basalt 13-3 in a non league game after its scheduled doubleheader with Moffat County earlier in the week was postponed due to rain.

Meeker, now 2-6-1 overall and 1-3 in league play, broke the game open early and never let the Longhorns recover, scoring in multiple innings and finishing with 10 hits, seven walks and nine stolen bases in an aggressive, well-rounded performance.

Senior Augie Halstead set the tone at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while driving in a run and consistently reaching base to spark the offense.

“Setting the tone at the top of the lineup is always a big focus for me,” Halstead said. “I just try to come out aggressive but under control and put together a quality at-bat to get things going. If I can get on base or hit the ball hard early, it kind of gives the rest of the lineup confidence and energy right away.”

Halstead said discipline and patience at the plate were key to Meeker’s success.

“I think the biggest difference in this game was our approach and discipline,” he said. “We were a lot more patient, we weren’t chasing pitches out of the zone, and we were looking to hit our pitch instead of just reacting. That helped us string together quality at-bats and put pressure on them.”

Junior Heriberto Lopez added steady production in the middle of the order, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored.

“What I saw from Basalt pitching that we were able to take advantage of was putting pressure on the pitcher and making him start throwing more balls,” Lopez said. “It was really important to finally put together a more complete offensive performance. We don’t have to necessarily crush the ball every at-bat, but by making solid contact and smart base running, more pressure is put on the defense and we score more runs.”

Freshman Bryant Turner continued his early-season emergence, reaching base in all of his plate appearances and scoring twice while driving in a run.

“Baseball is a huge mental sport,” Turner said. “Having trust in your training helps at the plate a lot to succeed. Early this season adjusting to pitches that are much better and faster was definitely difficult, but knowing I’m putting in extra work on my swing and confidence helped a lot.”

Turner added that the win also showed him the importance of learning from veterans on the roster.

“The win helped me personally because I was able to take away things that I saw from upperclassmen that worked well to keep energy up the whole game,” he said.

Junior Cade Mills delivered the biggest all-around performance of the night, contributing on both sides of the game. Mills went 1-for-3 with a home run, scored three runs and drove in another while also earning the win on the mound.

Mills pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five without issuing a walk.

“It was big to limit the amount of runs Basalt scored,” Mills said. “As a team we all hit the ball really well. No walks is great—just putting the ball over the plate really helped me the most. This team can do great things this year. It’s all taking one game at a time and not underestimating any team.”

Sophomore Logan Selby added a double, while sophomore Hoyt Garcia and junior Said Rodriguez each drove in runs. Rodriguez also helped fuel Meeker’s aggressive baserunning attack as the Cowboys swiped nine total bases.

Basalt struggled defensively, committing eight errors and issuing seven walks as Meeker consistently extended innings and capitalized on mistakes. Chris Hays led the Longhorns offensively with an RBI.

Meeker head coach James Romansky was not available for comment following the game.

The Cowboys will look to carry momentum into a busy week, hosting Aspen for a doubleheader Monday before traveling to Olathe later in the week.
