The winning streak for Meeker Cowboy basketball continues as they enter the final weeks of the regular season 11-1. They continue to inch up in the rankings and are the highest-ranked Western Slope team.
Last weekend they dominated three home games: Vail Mountain 64-26, Grand Valley 65-50 and North Fork 47-22.
“The games went really well this weekend,” said senior Jace Mobley. “Last weekend we had trouble rebounding because JT [Fitzgibbons] was out because of sickness.”
Mobley had 55 points and 18 rebounds on the weekend.
The Cowboys added a game with Grand Junction Central as their second to last game of the year when Mancos canceled the game that had been originally scheduled.
“Central will be tough and a good challenge,“ said Mobley.
A game with a team in a higher classification should help the Cowboys climb in the rankings if they secure a win. The rankings are lopsided at this time with the eastern side of the state earning more points due to a perceived tougher schedule.
Stat leaders from this past three-game weekend include Ryan Sullivan who had 44 points and JT Fitzgibbons with 29 points and 36 rebounds.
“It was great to be back on my feet again, surrounded by my great teammates,” Fitzgibbons told the HT. “In each game, it was fantastic to see where each guy stepped up to fill my spot. The three great wins definitely increased our confidence in our defense and scoring capabilities, both in the paint and with jump shots.”
“We are starting to be way more consistent and find out what works the best with the group of guys we have,” commented Sullivan.” We also have a couple bench players that have put in quality minutes in the last couple of weeks.”
The Cowboys continue their schedule of playing teams for a second matchup beginning with Little Snake at Baggs, a team they previously beat 59-33. Then they travel to Carbondale which will be a potential test for the team.
