MEEKER | Cowboy basketball began conference play last Saturday. Opening game at home against the North Park Wildcats, the Cowboys dominated with a final score of 54-27 and improving the overall record to 3-3.
Scoring was led by Cole Rogers and Ryan Phelan, who each put up double digits. Rogers had six points from sinking two three-pointers, was five of 17 on the night and scored 14 points total. Phelan led the team in two-point goals. He sank 50 percent of his attempts, had four offensive rebounds, and went 100 percent on the night in free throws for 12 total points.
“We still need to shoot the ball better,” commented head coach Klark Kindler. “We worked on some new things defensively over break and it helped.”
On the other side of the ball, the defense forced 32 turnovers that led to some easy baskets. They only allowed six offensive rebounds, and were led by Kale Burke. Burke led in steals and rebounds with four of each. Jonathan Lopez and Stephen Walsh were not far behind in both categories, rounding out the defensive leaders for the game.
JV and varsity will each be in action Friday at Caprock Academy and Saturday at home hosting Vail Christian with games beginning at 4 p.m. The boys and girls C team will be attending the Moffat County Tournament Saturday in Craig, Colo.
