Cowboys drop home game against Little Snake River

MEEKER |  The Meeker High School boys basketball team returned to action last Saturday following a two-week break. The Cowboys hosted Little Snake River, a rematch of their February 2024 meeting when Meeker claimed a 61-45 victory. This time, the visiting team turned the tables, defeating the Cowboys 51-39 which makes this game Meeker’s lowest-scoring game of the season.

Head coach Klark Kindler acknowledged the team’s struggles on offense and highlighted key areas for improvement.

“We are struggling offensively shooting the ball, and we have too many unforced turnovers,” Kindler said.

Despite the loss, the Cowboys saw strong performances from their senior leaders. Alex Garcia recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, setting a new career high for boards. Tyler Sanders produced 14 points for the Cowboys that night, while Drew Drake contributed six points and seven rebounds.

Kindler praised his seniors’ contributions and emphasized the importance of their leadership.

“We are continuing to get better in some phases of the game; we just need to cut down on the turnovers,” he said.

The Cowboys struggled to contain a couple of Little Snake River’s standout players. Sophomore Tymber Cozzens scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, adding six rebounds and five assists. While his teammate senior Jandro Kunsman contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Looking ahead to their upcoming matchup against the Grand Valley Cardinals who come in with a 2-7 record, Kindler discussed the team’s focus during practice.

“We will be working on improving our shooting and attacking a zone defense,” he said.

The loss dropped Meeker to 0-6 on the 24-25 season. This also marked their fifth consecutive home defeat, a streak that dates back to last year. Head Coach Klark Kindler spoke about adjustments he plans to make to better compete in the league matchups.

“We need to create some transition baskets and cut down on the turnovers,” he said.

The Cowboys will remain at home on Friday, hosting the Grand Valley Cardinals (2-7) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, they travel to Cedaredge to take on the Bruins, with junior varsity tipping off at 12:30 p.m. and varsity at 3:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team on Friday night. Good luck to the team this weekend and as always Go Cowboys!
