MEEKER | In a stunning upset, the Cowboys fell to Gunnison 30-6.
“I keep thinking back on the game and wishing we could have a redo,” commented head coach Andy Coryell. “If we needed to learn lessons or have a wakeup call it is better to have it now then in three weeks.”
“In Mindset we talk about winning nine times out of 10 to an opponent, but if one time your head isn’t right they will win,” commented senior captain Judd Harvey, “this was that scenario, and they beat us, we won’t let it happen again.”
Gunnison put up three points in their opening drive of the game and Meeker was unable to answer and then unable to stop Gunnison from adding another seven to go up 10-0 early.
Meeker went into the locker room at the half scoreless.
“We talk to the boys about coming out with a bang, with energy and force and they did not do that in the first half,” said Coryell, “our second half was better but still not what we wanted from them.”
The Cowboys got on the board with six and needing to make up a lot of ground, they went for a two point conversion, and it was a failed attempt.
“We were reverting to old habits, all of us were,” commented Harvey.
“We know what needs to be fixed and that is what we will focus on this week,” said Coryell.
The Cowboys turned over the ball six times with five interceptions and one fumble. Double the turnovers from all the previous games combined.
“Offensively I call all the plays will take blame, I was calling the plays and it was not working, “ commented Coryell.
When the dust settled from the loss the rankings reflected a jump in the poles by Gunnison but not a drop by the Cowboys, and in the selection and seeding index they remained at number three.
Top performances on defense by Brendan Clatterbaugh with 21 tackles, Cade Blunt with 17 and Judd Harvey with 15. Blunt led with 89 all purpose yards, Clay Crawford had 88, and Jace Mobley 74.
This week the Cowboys will take on a team from Idaho in their first ever matchup. Teton High School is a 3A school in Idaho and has a record of 6-1. Game time is 6 p.m., and will take place in Evanston, Wyoming. The game will be broadcast on Coffee with Coaches.
