Cowboys nab league championship

MEEKER | Undefeated in their league and with a 10-1 victory over the Rangely Panthers the Cowboys sealed the league championship last week.

Jonathan Fitzgibbons took the win, throwing 92 pitches in seven innings, striking out 11 and only allowing one run.

Jace Mobley batted 1000 and he and Carson Klinzmann led with three runs each and Augie Halstead batted 667 and Ethan Quinn 600.

Grand Valley has yet to win a game which gave Coach Blazon an opportunity to play some of the Cowboys in new positions to get a good look at how they do in a low stress game.

The final score was 21-1. Meeker was up 10-1 at the end of the third then scored 11 runs in the top of the fourth to finish it up.

Ryan Sullivan pitched the first three innings striking out seven, had no errors, and only allowed one run. Skylar Browning came in to finish it up, striking out three more to wrap up the fourth inning.

Spencer Gates had a two run and four RBI afternoon accounting for over a third of the total team points and Quinn had a three RBI four run day and Jake Blazon batted 1000.

The Meeker varsity is off this week but the JV will take the field two times and the varsity will be back in action next Monday.

It is time to consider Cowboy baseball post season play. The top 32 teams in the state are hosted by the top eight. Due to the ranking system, playing Grand Valley was a hindrance to Meeker’s placing. The team is currently sitting at 21, which means that they have all but secured a spot in the playoffs. With only one game left against a very strong and high ranked Basalt, there is potential that even with a loss they will move up a couple positions. This is because the ranking looks at your opponent’s opponent and Basalt will be playing two of the best teams in the state this weekend. There will be some movement in the polls but not enough to move Meeker into the top eight to host a game.

The regular season for 2A officially comes to a close on May 16 and rankings and locations will be out on May 17 for a single elimination regional tournament May 19-20. One winner from the three teams in the tournament then continues on to the quarters and semis the following weekend, which is followed by the finals on June 3.
