MEEKER | The 22-point victory over Soroco on Tuesday meant the Cowboys played the district tournament on the championship side of the bracket. Meeker took on the number one ranked team in the league, Vail Christian. Meeker jumped out to a first quarter lead but by halftime found themselves down by nine points. The Cowboys fought back in the third quarter to close the gap to four points by the end of the quarter. Vail Christian again pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cowboys by a score of 66-52.
Playing for third place the Cowboys looked towards West Grand on Saturday. A close contest in the first half led to Meeker going into the locker room with a 24-17 lead. In the second half, the Cowboys outpaced the Mustangs 32-12 to secure the victory with a final score of 56-29 and bring home third place.
Kale Burke and Cole Rogers led the offense scoring for the tournament, Rogers had another stellar weekend with nine three-pointers and put up a total 34 points, Burke sank 25 points and boasted some of the highest shooting percentages.
The road to the Colorado State Basketball Tournament and elite eight continues this Friday, March 1 when the Cowboys will take on Highland in Ault, Colo. Highland is currently ranked third in the state, and won their district bracket to earn the opportunity to host one of the eight regional tournaments. Del Norte, ranked 14, and Sedgwick County, ranked 19, are the other two teams in the four-team tournament looking for a bid to state. Games will begin at 5 p.m. Friday.
