The Cowboys won big over the visiting Roaring Fork Rams for the homecoming game. With a running clock early in the third quarter, the final score was 41-8.
It was a big day for the boys with a parade and pep rally, where Dagon Dade represented the team, culminating in a great football win.
Offensively the Cowboys showed the fans some new plays this past weekend and a lot of passing. They scored on nearly every possession, converted the majority of the third downs, and had contributions from the entire bench.
Clay Crawford ran for 114 yards and Connor Blunt 100 yards. Receiving, Jace Mobley led with 35 yards from Ryan Sullivan who threw for 54 yards. Scoring came from Sullivan, Crawford, Blunt, Mobley and Dade.
Defensively they racked up quite a few tackles for losses led by Judd Harvey. Tackling leaders this week were Hayden Shults and Casey Brink each with four. Blunt, Brendan Clatterbaugh, and Harvey each with three. Ethan Quinn and Brink each had an interception to finish out the defense.
Homecoming week, a notoriously busy week for Meeker High School students, didn’t keep the boys from focusing on the task ahead.
“I thought the kids handled the week really well,” said head coach Andy Coryell. “There are so many things going on during homecoming week, but they were ready when they needed to be and I really liked how they came out to start the game.”
The Cowboys have only lost one game this year so far, to the number one ranked Limon Badgers. Senior Dagon Dade, when asked what he felt the biggest accomplishment was for the team so far, said, “I feel it is being able to work together and encourage each other through our mistakes. As a team we have come so far and we have so much further to go.”
This week the entire team will travel together for the first time as they look to face the Bruins.
“We are going to take everybody to Cedaredge. It’s important for the young guys to experience a league road game,” commented Coryell.
“I am preparing for Cedaredge in the same way as I prepare for every game; it’s on and off the field,” said Dade. “It’s being able to practice hard even when the weather isn’t great. It’s watching film and studying the defense and offense. It’s also about listening to the coaches and their input, and being able to be coached.”
They have yet to face league opponents Buena Vista and Gunnison, which have each had interesting seasons. Buena Vista has suffered two losses, one to Limon and the other to Gunnison. In the Gunnison game Buena Vista had 107 yards in penalties and Gunnison was effective at stopping the Camp to Camp passing game. The losses by both BV and Gunnison have cost them in the rankings; BV is sitting at number nine in the RPI and Gunnision is not in the top ten, Meeker is holding strong at number three.
The Cowboys play Cedaredge this weekend at 7 p.m. in Cedaredge before hosting Buena Vista next weekend.
