◆ Bricklaying on Oldland & Co.’s new store room began Wednesday.
◆ James Fullerton is a taxidermist as well as a photographer. See his notice elsewhere in this issue.
◆ Monday last a fire started in the pine and spruce forest at the head of Big Beaver Creek, and has been burning more or less fiercely ever since. Nearly every night the smoke settle sin the valley, and for a few hours after daybreak it appears thick enough to cut with a knife. Carelessness in regard to campfires was the prime cause.

◆ The railroad strike is about settled. The strikers are returning to work. In most cases a compromise settlement was effected.
◆ Do you know there is a library in your town; where it is located; what it contains; how it may be used and what it will do for you?
◆ It is said there is a chicken thief abroad in Meeker. If he doesn’t look out he is liable to get a load of buckshot in his souther exposure when he is going north, or something heavier.

◆ Seems a little early in the season to be having Homecoming celebrations but maybe it’s better to have it now than later when it might snow. (We might have to retract that statement as the weather report said possible snow fall in mountain areas. Let’s hope not. Last year’s celebration was a mass of confusion mixed with 6 inches of snow.
◆ John Panak, guardian of the town dump, justified his position Saturday when he helped a town fire truck fight a fire at the dump, apparently started by careless smoking.
◆ Oldland & Co. in Meeker has recently expanded their service in the clothing goods department. The new loft will stock fashion ready-to wear apparel.

◆ The Meeker Police Department is being buried in paperwork and administrative details, and eventually will have to trim its level of service unless it gets more help. That was the message from police chief Si Woodruff to the Meeker Town Council on Sept. 16.
◆ Seven candidates are vying for three seats on the Meeker Board of Education in the Nov. 5 election: Jerry Martin, Sam Love, Mancy Madison, Elizabeth Turner, Clair Brown, Chuck Whiteman and Jerry Oldland.

Rangely Times ~ 50 years ago

◆ Population of Rangely is predicted at 9,350 by 1981 if the Interior Department test lease oil shale program is developed on schedule. This is more than four times present population.
◆ Homecoming activities have gotten into full swing this week. Tonight will be the annual Snake Dance and bonfire.
◆ A politician is one who can get money from the rich and votes from the poor and make each think he is protecting them from the other.

◆ On Sept. 11, Blue Mountain Energy, Inc. began working on a new portal at Deserado Mine.
◆ According to Bob Bell, the elk they are raising are for the breeding market for resale “The demand is fairly high, so there is a good breeding market which just means you can sell every calf that you can produce right now at a price that you can’t afford to butcher for.” There are more than 300 elk farms operational in the state of Colorado right now.
