The JV kicked off the year on Olathe.

“The kids wrestled with enthusiasm and wrestled hard,” commented assistant coach Carl Padilla. “It was the first competition of the season so we still have some things to work on”. Placing in Olathe was Hayden Shults too first, Jake Blazon second, Reed Goedert second and Trevor Crooks took fourth but had to forfeit his last match due to the five match rule. Which is a CHSAA rule governing all colorado high school wrestlers that during any CHSAA sanctioned duals or tournaments no wrestler may wrestle more than five matches a day.
The five match rule often comes into play when there are a lot of kids in a double elimination tournament and with a loss it takes many more matches to get to the placing rounds.
The varsity began the year at the traditional Maverick Duals hosted by Colorado Mesa University. As a team they went 3-2, beating North Fork, Rangely, and Montezuma-Cortez.
“I think the kids wrestled tough and are doing really well for the beginning of the season,” commented head coach JC Watt. “The teams we wrestled didn’t have a lot of kids or competition at the upper weights but at the lower weights the teams were tough and gave us a challenge.”
Connor Blunt at 165 lbs, Cade Blunt 175, Brendan Clatterbaugh 190, and Judd Harvey 215, all went undefeated.
This weekend is another good weekend for the Cowboys, with JV traveling to Rifle on Saturday and varsity will attend a triangular with Cedaredge and Buena Vista on Friday, followed by a Panther Invitational Tournament in Delta Saturday.
“The Delta tournament is going to be tough and we should see some good matchups,” commented Watt.
Sixteen teams will be in Delta from class 5A to 2A, and the tournament will begin at 8:30 am. The Rifle JV tournament begins at 9:30 am.
