Guest Editorial: USFS sticks up for coal mining roadless lands

RBC I The U.S. Forest Service has announced it will try to reinstate the exemption to Colorado’s roadless rule that allows coal mines to build roads in protected areas of Western Colorado. The exemption was struck down last summer by a federal court because the government failed to assess the impact of that future coal mining on climate change.

  1. To whom it may concern – USFS?
I was very fortunate in that I was able to live in Colorado for a couple years in the early 70s. I still proudly wear my “Denver Olympics 76” ski cap every year during ski season.
Of course, there was no Denver Olympics, due to the misleading Propaganda put out by certain groups.
In broader perspective, it is obvious that every positive, constructive, attempt by those in Colorado who could do REAL, PRODUCTIVE extraction of resources will be opposed by a flood of negative propaganda by groups and individuals who do not have the best interests of the United States FIRST. The mission of the the USDA Forest Service and Dept of Int BLM, and all other Federal departments, SHOULD be to implement the furtherance of industry and production from any resources they have within their realm of responsibility. If it is timber management, let’s produce lumber. If it is grazing, let’s allow livestock to control underbrush and prevent tragic wildfires. If it is minerals, let’s encourage mining – for gold, silver, tin, aluminum, lead, copper, etc etc. And if it’s for energy, a primary responsibility of all national, state and local gov’t entities SHOULD be to encourage this nation’s energy independence!!
As a (now) Oregonian with much fondness for the state and the people of Colorado, I hope that the rational minds prevail and Colorado’s working people can become productive in helping to move our country forward by extracting a resource which will benefit not only Colorado but our whole nation!
