MEEKER I With plenty of 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues, the Meeker High School Drama Club and International Thespian Society Troupe 1284 rendition of the popular Broadway musical “Hairspray” promises to provide great entertainment this weekend.
In 1962 Baltimore, Md., plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show.
When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, then launches a campaign to integrate the show. “Hairspray” is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
“Hairspray” is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International (music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman) and based on the 1988 John Waters film.
Performances will be held Friday, April 20, and Saturday April 21 at 7 p.m., and a Sunday April 22 matinee at
2 p.m. at the Meeker High School Auditorium. Admission: $10 for adults and $5 for children, students and seniors.
