HISTORY LESSONS: Death, taxes… and politics

RBC | It has been said that the only sure things are Death and Taxes. I would like to add politics to that list. I do not think it is a coincidence that Halloween and Elections are only a few days apart. Both can have scary surprises around the corner. I offer an illustration of my theory. If you get a chance, slow down and observe the extensive Halloween display on Market Street. There is a horse-drawn hearse complete with an undertaker wearing a mask modeled on a well-known presidential candidate.

I visited our Highland Cemetery, looking for a story. Someone had told me about an unusual gravestone that I should check out. The husband/wife headstone reads Margie Pauline…Born a Democrat, Died a Democrat. The other half of the stone reads: George Robert… Born a Republican, Died a Republican. This was taking politics to the extreme.

I know voting party lines can be a habit. I would urge our voters to go the extra mile and study issues and candidates beyond just reading oversized political postcards trying to scare us into voting for them. Campaign promises are not any more reliable than weather reports. Look at a candidate’s voting record or lifestyle to see if they align with your values. Make educated decisions. Most of all, VOTE! We on the Western Slope are often outvoted by Front Range interests who do NOT understand the reality on this side of the Divide. It is in our best interest to not be lazy and forfeit our right to have our voices heard.
