MEEKER | The lady Cowboys struggled with a new league opponent, Gunnison, this weekend, and the number 21 ranked Cedaredge Bruins.
Meeker is now 3-7 on what can be considered a rebuilding year.
“The girls are working so hard,” commented head coach Jamie Rogers. “They continue to push and try new things and are growing.”
The Cowboys went to the locker room up by five, but in the third quarter Gunnison put up 19 points to Meeker’s five and the Cowboys could not recover. Final score was 36-44.
Ainsley Selle led with 13 rebounds, Charlie Rogers eight, and Jayden Overton seven.
Cedaredge could only be defined as the toughest challenge on the weekend for Meeker. The Bruins only allowed three lady Cowboys to score: Selle 13, Hossack nine and Overton one. Final score 23-43.
The Bruins, a historically athletic and quick team, dominated the final three quarters after the Cowboys held them to only four points in the first. Their full court press could not be broken by the Cowboys, and the Bruins did not let up.
This weekend will be a rematch between the Cardinals and the Cowboys. The Cardinals are the number eight ranked team in the state and come to Meeker for games beginning with girls JV at 4 p.m. on Friday. Saturday, the number 19 ranked North Fork Miners will be in Meeker for games beginning at 1 p.m. with girls JV followed by boys JV and the varsity games.
