The Meeker Cowboys basketball girls team is now 7-5 and sitting at number 12 in class 3A after a 1-1 weekend.
Grand Valley is the highest-ranked team on the Western Slope. They are undefeated, and have handily beaten all their opponents except the Cowboys. In their first matchup the Cowboys stayed within three points and look to do that again. The Cardinals are a well-coached team and adjusted to beat the Cowboys 68-43.
Ellie Hossack led with 12 points, Ainsley Selle had 11 and Reese Clatterbaugh had six.
A loss to a team of this magnitude does very little to negatively impact the rankings and the Cowboys are looking good for going far into the postseason.
“This past weekend I thought we did a great job on defense, Ainsley Selle told the HT this week, continuing, “we were all rotating around super well and communicating with each other. I thought we did great on offense, too, and worked on passing the ball around to get more open shots. Grand Valley had an amazing night shooting-wise, and although we couldn’t shut them down, it was very beneficial to play against that tough competition so we know what to work on for post season. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds!”
Saturday in front of a packed home crowd, North Fork came to town and went home with another loss on their record. The Cowboys won 50-38 led by sophomore Rylee Sullivan who had 19 points, Charlie Rogers with eight and Hossack put up seven.
North Fork was unable to answer the attack of Hossack and Sullivan or the defensive strength of Selle with 10 rebounds and Clatterbaugh with eight.
This week the Cowboys will be on the road to Baggs on Thursday, Olathe on Friday and Carbondale on Saturday.
