MEEKER I The Meeker High School girls’ basketball team continued their unbeaten league play as they defeated Soroco by 29 points and Hayden by 45 points over the weekend.
Meeker had nine players score against the Rams with three of them in double figures. Sydney Hughes led the way with 17 points followed by Taylor Neilson with 14 and Deena Norell with 13. Megan Parker added five points, Aly Ridings added three and Taylor Morris, Reese Pertile, Jamie McLaughlin and Jenna Walsh each added a bucket.
The lady Cowboys played solid defense, holding their opponent well below what they frequently score. Meeker out-rebounded the Rams significantly with Hughes pulling 10 boards, giving her a double-double. Neilson had nine rebounds, Ridings and Norell each grabbed eight and Megan Parker had six.
On Saturday, the team proved they have an incredible offense to match their tenacious defense scoring an incredible 35 first-quarter points. Meeker not only had a scoring frenzy, they held Hayden to nine points.
The tempo slowed in the second quarter as the lady Cowboys scored 13 and the Tigers had six, making the score 48-15 at intermission.
Meeker came out of the locker room strong as they outscored Hayden again, 18-5, finishing up with the 78-33 win.
Hughes once again led all scorers with 20, followed closely by Ridings with 19, Piper Haney and Norell with eight each, Neilson with seven, and Morris had four, while Walsh and Parker rounded out the scoring with two each.
The lady Cowboys will work to stretch their streak as they play Vail Christian and Little Snake River this weekend.
