The Meeker girls basketball team has blown last year’s season out of the water. Just half way through the season and they have one more win than they had all of last year.
“We are much more cohesive as a team this year and it is showing,” commented Ainsley Selle in the podcast Celsius with Athletes.
One loss and one win last weekend has them going into a big challenge this weekend with a 6-4 record.
Meeker dominated Gunnison 54-28 with double digit points led by Charlie Rogers and Ellie Hossack in a win that had contributions from the entire team. Sophomore Rylee Sullivan had eight points and 11 rebounds and junior Reese Clatterbaugh added five points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Cowboys break the top ten for the first time in two years.
“This season is going very well,” began Clatterbaugh, “the ranking and our whole dynamic is amazing, we are having much more success this year after a rebuilding year last year.”
The second game of the weekend in Cedaredge was a close game and the Cowboys went down 35-40 in a game that was decided late in the 4th quarter.
“The close games have been a great learning opportunity for myself and the team,” commented Clatterbaugh. “When we have the close games and come out winning its a confidence boost but even when we lose it still teaches us a lot.”
Clatterbaugh and Sullivan each had eight points in the game against the Bruins and Clatterbaugh leads the team in field goal percentage.
The Cowboys will host the Grand Valley Cardinals on Friday evening at home. The Cardinals are 11-0 and ranked fourth in class 3A. In their previous matchup the Cowboys lost by four, making this a very winnable game and the Cardinals beatable.
“We have seen so many positives this year,” wrapped up Clatterbaugh, “we are having fun playing basketball and building the relationships with our teammates.”
Friday’s games begin at 4pm starting with JV. Saturday North Fork comes to town and games begin at 2:30 pm.
