Request from the Meeker Cemetery District
Dear Editor:
I am writing on behalf of the Meeker Cemetery Board to ask for the community’s help in preserving the dignity and reverence of one of Meeker’s most treasured places.
The Meeker Cemetery, located on the mesa overlooking our town, is not only widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the nation, it is also the final resting place of many individuals who shaped our community’s history—including early settlers, civic leaders, veterans, and other historically significant figures. It is a place of reflection, remembrance, and respect.
This cemetery belongs to our community. It is overseen by a Special District Cemetery Board, but it is truly held in trust by the people of Meeker—past, present, and future. Its care and preservation rely not only on maintenance and policy, but on shared values and mutual respect.
In recent months, the Cemetery Staff have observed a significant increase in visitors bringing dogs onto cemetery property. While we understand and appreciate that many residents enjoy walking the trail and spending time in this scenic area, the cemetery has maintained a longstanding no-dog policy. This policy exists to protect gravesites, maintain cleanliness, and—most importantly—to preserve the solemn character of the cemetery for families who come to honor their loved ones.
The cemetery is gated and monitored by security cameras. However, our sincere desire is not to issue warnings or trespassing citations. Enforcement is not our goal. We would far prefer to rely on community awareness and cooperation to help manage this issue. Respect for this place—especially by neighbors reminding neighbors—goes much farther than tickets ever could.
We take great pride in the stewardship of the Meeker Cemetery, and we know our community shares that pride. With your help, we can ensure this remarkable and meaningful place remains one of peace, beauty, and reverence for generations to come.
Thank you for your understanding, respect, and continued care for this special place.
Respectfully,
Teresia R. Reed – President
Meeker Cemetery Board
