Huitt for Wolfson (REFER TO EDITOR’S NOTE BELOW FOR CORRECTIONS)

Dear Editor:
Rio Blanco County has recently been through some of the most difficult division over politics in recent times. I hopefully have some good news. There is a race I think we can all agree on. Let’s take a look at the House District 26 candidates’ track record.

Both candidates have been elected to party leadership. Savannah Wolfson was Routt County Republican secretary. She helped all local Republican candidates, as the bylaws require. Meghan Lukens was twice elected the Boulder County Vice Chair. She went above and beyond helping local candidates and brought AOC to Colorado. She called AOC “captivating.”

Meghan Lukens was raised in Steamboat Springs and moved to Boulder to attend college, stayed there, went through candidate training last year and then moved back to the district after redistricting. She is only interested in the seat, not the people in the district. She now lives in her childhood bedroom. Who knows if she even pays for her groceries, but certainly doesn’t pay property tax. That must be why she is so set on “fixing” the Taxpayers Bill of Rights. Savannah Wolfson is a mom in Oak Creek who pays for groceries. housing, and gas like the rest of us and fully understands how difficult it is to try to make ends meet. She will fight to reduce taxes and the high cost of living because she actually has skin in the game.

Meghan Lukens is opposed to oil, gas, and coal. She, like her party, has demonized our energy sources instead of promoting them. I am quite sure she will do everything she can to get rid of these important resources. Savannah Wolfson is a third generation military spouse and understands and promotes the use of the clean energy that is produced in our local communities. Savannah Wolfson’s children are in 4-H shooting sports, and believes in responsible self defense and protecting our 2nd Amendment rights. She supports law enforcement and has the support of her local sheriff. Megan Lukens has held anti-gun rallies on the courthouse lawn in Steamboat. She seems to know nothing about guns and how they work, but is opposed to certain rifles based solely on their appearance. She also passed a resolution in Boulder in support of SB20-217, the Defund the Police law. Meghan Lukens supports Critical Race Theory to be taught in all of our schools, and is proud to say that she teaches it to children. Savannah Wolfsons family is multiracial and that race doesn’t define anyone’s future is America.

Finally, Meghan Lukens isn’t just pro-wolf. As the Boulder County Vice Chair, she got out the vote in 2020 in Boulder County in support of the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. As we all know Boulder county was very instrumental in getting that law passed. Savannah Wolfson has a small dairy goat operation and strongly supports agriculture, conservation, and our hunting industry.

This race will come down to voter turnout so please get out and vote and support Savannah as our next state representative in House District 26. We can’t allow the Biden and Boulder agenda to represent our county.

Thank you
Frank Huitt

EDITOR’S NOTE: (added 9.22.22)

While we have not had a formal policy for fact-checking letters, we do reject letters that include obvious falsehoods and libelous statements. Sometimes falsehoods aren’t obvious, and libel is a sticky wicket when it comes to political candidates, but we feel it necessary to alert our readers that several recent claims made about HD26 candidate Meghan Lukens in a letter to the editor published on Sept. 1, 2022 are inaccurate or unverifiable. Some of the claims mentioned include:

Claim: Bringing AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] to Colorado

Fact: U.S. House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke at a fundraising dinner in Boulder in 2019 organized by the Boulder Democratic Party. Lukens was the fundraising lead for the Boulder County Democrats at the time. According to the Denver Post, “Congressman Joe Neguse, D-Boulder, introduced Ocasio-Cortez at the dinner. He has a record of bringing congressmen and women to his district…”

Claim: Returned to her hometown from Boulder solely for the purpose of running for office.

Fact: Lukens is a Steamboat Springs High School alumnae and attended college at the University of Colorado — Boulder, returning to Steamboat in the summers. She taught at Steamboat Springs High School in 2016, taught overseas in Kosovo in 2017-2018, and then taught in Lafayette until 2021.

Claim: Lives with her parents.

Fact: During the spring and summer of 2020 during the pandemic, she lived with her family in Steamboat Springs. She currently shares a rented condo in Steamboat Springs with a fellow teacher.

Claim: Has held anti-gun rallies on the courthouse lawn in Steamboat and passed a resolution in Boulder in support of SB20-217.

Fact: A rally was organized by Steamboat High School students in March 2018 after the Parkland, Florida high school shooting and held at the high school, not the courthouse. Lukens was teaching in Kosovo at that time.
SB20-217 — the Enhance Law Enforcement Integrity bill — added funding to the Colorado State Patrol and passed with bipartisan support in the Colorado State Legislature. The 150 Executive Committee of the Boulder County Democratic Party passed a resolution in support of SB20-217 in 2020.

Claim: Is against oil and gas and pro-wolf.

Fact: Lukens is on the record as being anti-wolf, stating “Wolf reintroduction should never have been on the ballot. This was not something that should have ever been a statewide vote.” Her position on energy is an “all-of-the-above domestic energy strategy.”
