Local author Lou Dean has an article published in the Christmas edition of Guideposts magazine titled “Unexpected Visitors.”
Dean shared an excerpt with the HT: “Christmas of 2023 looked bleak when I ended up confined to the house on Blue Mountain with broken toes. My daily walks with my dogs suddenly were limited to the yard, where I could only hobble. Fighting depression, I watched my poor Border Collie/Aussie, Dell Dog, spend all of his days at the window, looking for deer or birds to add some action to his day. Then, a large number of wild turkeys appeared.
I had always owned Border Collies and attended the Meeker Classic. I had a secret desire to train a dog to herd, but had never owned stock. As the turkeys began to appear daily, I conceived the idea of training Dell to herd them away from the bird seed in the yard to an area near the barn. That effort led to a much brighter Christmas and success of a longtime goal.”
Some autographed copies of Dean’s books are available at Restored Grace in Meeker and Sweetbriar in Rangely. Guideposts’ “The 2024 Joys of Christmas” can be purchased online.
