Loose Ends: Set the example

Attending dogfights of any kind are not on my list of weekly “must-dos,” so going out in the public arena to get ready to cast my vote this year has not been filled with rancorous, unnecessary debate. Choosing to use the convenient, mail-in- ballot that has been available here for the past couple of years, I remain comfortable with our local election process. Year after year, the system here has worked well.

It seems that no matter how much one is prepared for the results, there will be some political upsets that no one expects, as well as more disheartening news regarding the elections throughout the country. Our divisiveness continues to erode our democracy. The behavior of those we have chosen to represent us in our respective state and local governments are important, but the words and actions of community adults, who children count on to act as positive role models are critical to shaping future stellar citizens.

Children continue to be taught that taking an active part in the community is expected. Every grade in primary school continues to dole out good citizenship awards. This opportunity to learn by doing leads them into acting like a good citizen more often in their daily life. It might be the perfect time for more community organizations to try and build upon this and award their own yearly “Citizen of the Year awards.” It cannot hurt.
