Marlins win state champ for third year

MEEKER | The Meeker Marlins USA Swim Team had 11 swimmers qualify for the Colorado USA Scottie Aschermann Seasonal State Championship Swim Meet in Fort Morgan, Colorado, last weekend.

These swimmers were successful individually and as a team. The Meeker Marlins won the “Small Team” division for the third consecutive year by scoring a total of 1,249 points.

Four swimmers won one or more individual state championships in their age groups: Evelyn Borchard, Gael Rodriguez, Said Rodriguez and Tucker Chinn. In addition to the team win, four Meeker Marlin swimmers received High Point awards in their age group: In the 6 and under girls, Evelyn Borchard won second place overall. In the 11-12 year old boys, Gael Rodriguez placed second overall. In the 13-14 year old boys Said Rodriguez placed second overall and Tucker Chinn won first place overall.

The 13-14 year old boys won first place in both the 200 Free and 200 Medley Relays. They also broke their own state records in these events. The members of these relays are: Dexter Chinn, Jonan VonRoenn, Said Rodriguez and Tucker Chinn.

Tucker Chinn broke the Boys 13-14 Colorado Seasonal State record in the 1000 Yard Free.  Said Rodriguez broke the Boys 13-14 Colorado Seasonal State record in both the 50 Yard Fly and the 100 Fly.

Coach Shelly Rogers stated, “Again, for another year, I am the proudest coach in the world!  The kids continue to improve their technique while swimming 3,000 yards a day. Their work is internal, I don’t have to push them to do their best in practice. They know what hard work translates to….and they want it! They are the hardest working kids I know! I see some younger swimmers in our high level swim lessons who I am hoping to recruit to grow the program. It’s a tough sport and as my swimmers say, ‘It’s the only sport where the coach yells at you for breathing!’ Way to go, Meeker Marlins!”
