Meeker’s Kindall named WSL player of the year

MHS Cowgirls’
Atwood is top coach; RHS’s Meagan Piering
also an all-star

MEEKER — Janae Kindall was named the Western Slope League (WSL) volleyball player of the year by a unanimous vote from the coaches in the league.
“There really aren’t words to describe how hard it has been to keep this under wraps until after the state tournament had concluded,” coach Christy Atwood said.
Kindall led the team in kills, second in digs and aces, and according to Atwood, Kindall started to develop her “complete” game this summer.
“Having the taste of success simply added more determination to her already unrelenting drive to better herself,” Atwood said. “We spent countless nights after practice with a setter getting “one more good one” please, coach? I have been blessed to have her on the varsity team for three years watching her grow as a player and person. We are so very proud of everything she has accomplished.”
Kindall was named to the CCGS All-State team, which played this past weekend in Denver. She was one of 18 girls from the 2A classification to play in this prestigious event.
Meagan Piering from Rangely played for the blue.
“She did an amazing job as well,” Atwood said.
Kindall will also play in the CHSCA All-State games in June on the UNC campus in Greeley. There are only 10 girls chosen for the games in June, so again a great accomplishment for a player from the Western Slope.
Atwood was named WSL coach of the year and coach for the 2A CCGS All-State Games red team.
“Both have been a bit overwhelming to grasp,” Atwood said. “Volleyball has been a passion for as many years as I can remember. Having the ability to share my knowledge and love of the game with these girls is a reward in itself.”
Atwood said the past week is still mostly a blur, but one she will never forget.
“It was twice as sweet simply because I was able to coach Janae and Holli Salazar from Hayden on the red team,” Atwood said.
The weekend started with practice, pictures and a banquet on Saturday and concluded Sunday with the 2A Red vs. Blue match at Broomfield High School.
“I don’t know if I have seen so many girls with smiling faces on a court ever,” she said. “The red team was on the losing end of the match, unfortunately, but the smiles and excitement still oozed from each player.”
