MEEKER | The Meeker Recreation Center 8-10 softball team continued to show growth last week despite falling on the road against Rifle, with the team now turning its attention toward its final regular-season game before the end-of-season tournament.
Meeker entered the matchup with Rifle shorthanded, but the young squad continued to compete and gain valuable experience.
“We were short a handful of players against Rifle, but the girls played hard and competed well,” head coach Colt Walker said.
Walker said he was encouraged by the team’s approach throughout the game, especially at the plate and in the field.
“We hit the ball well against Rifle and showed a good competitive spirit,” Walker said. “Even though we came up short, we learned a lot and everyone got to play a lot of different positions.”
With the regular season winding down, Meeker is continuing to focus on developing fundamentals and building confidence before tournament play.
“Practice this week we will continue focusing on just getting better at the fundamentals and continue learning the game with an emphasis on base running and hitting our cutoffs,” Walker said.
The coaching staff is looking for the team to continue making smart decisions and playing with confidence as the season progresses.
“We hope to see the team continue improving with fundamentals and making smart plays with the softball and being aggressive,” Walker said.
Walker said the biggest takeaway from the season has been the players’ willingness to learn and improve each time they step on the field.
“We’ve been very proud of how intentional the girls have been with getting better each time we play and practice,” Walker said. “They are interested in learning the game and eager to get better. It’s been fun to be a part of.”
Meeker will play its final road game of the regular season against Carbondale before turning its attention toward the end-of-season tournament July 18.
