MEEKER | The Meeker Recreation Center 8-10 softball team picked up its first win of the season last week, defeating Glenwood 10-1 on the road.
After opening the season with a pair of close losses, Meeker took another step forward with an all-around performance in its first road game.
“The girls handled the first road game well. They were ready to play,” head coach Colt Walker said. “The boom box in the dugout helped out.”
Walker said the victory reflected the progress the team has made through the opening weeks of the season.
“We learned that if we keep practicing hard and work on getting better each and every time we play, good things will happen,” he said.
Walker credited the players’ commitment during practice for the team’s steady improvement.
“We’ve seen a lot of progress from game one, and that’s due to the girls practicing hard and focusing,” Walker said. “They’ve been great about listening and learning what coaches Cherlynn Muxlow and Colin Metz have to teach them.”
Walker said the coaching staff remains focused on player development as the season continues.
“We are working to get better at all phases and be better than we were the day before,” he said.
The team continues to emphasize fundamentals while building confidence with each game.
“The girls are all working hard, and we are all learning a lot,” Walker said. “We hope to improve base running and continue learning the game each time we play.”
Meeker will look to build on its first victory Thursday when it travels to face Rifle 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Graham. The team will continue emphasizing base running and making smart plays in the field as it looks to carry its momentum into another road contest.
