MEEKER — The Meeker High School football team officially concluded its 2008 season with at the annual banquet hosted by the parents. Approximately 100 people attended.
Seniors Quinn Wix, Tyler Matrisciano, Trenton Schindler, William Roybal, Caleb Ball, Bubba Mazzola and Andrew Lawrence were all honored by the audience for their final year of participation in the football program.
Wix was entrusted as master of ceremonies for the evening. After dinner, Wix called on MHS head coach Shane Phelan for comments. Phelan thanked all who participated in the program this year and then commented on each of the senior players.
Phelan noted “This is an exceptional group of seniors; they will be successful in all their endeavors.”
After the comments, Phelan handed out the season awards. Participation certificates were given to the younger players for their contributions to the team.
Twenty-two varsity players received letter certification, and eight additional players were recognized by the conference coaches for outstanding play.
Tyrel Gerloff and Jarrett Waldreff received honorable mention, Mitch Jacob, Brock Campbell, Trenton Schindler, Quinn Wix, Caleb Ball and Bubba Mazzola all received first team all conference awards.
Jack Ball then continued the tradition of the “Passing of the Cowbell.” The cowbell recognizes the parent(s) who have the dubious honor of the most outstanding effort for displaying encouragement to the team during games.
Since artificial noisemakers are not allowed at games, encouragement is recognized by voice projection. Ball received the award from then senior parent Chuck Mills in 2006 and graciously passed it on to this year’s recipients Brad and Jana Campbell.
Each senior had an opportunity to comment about his experiences and to give thanks.
In closing, Coach Phelan challenged his younger players to, “Get to work! Get out and compete, join a winter sport, lift weights, championships are made in the off season.”
