The Meeker Cowboys are district champions for the first time since they moved up to class 3A and will host regionals for the first time since 2021. Sitting at first in their league they bypassed the pigtails and went straight to the Friday and Saturday tournament.
Outscoring their opponents in every quarter the Cowboys beat Grand Valley 71-47, double digit wins for the third time this season. Jace Mobley and Ryan Sullivan putting up big numbers once again. Mobley adding 24 points and Sullivan with 20, didn’t just lead in scoring, Mobley also had 11 rebounds and Sullivan nine. Both having their best performances of the season.
In the championship match the team faced Roaring Fork and held them to single digit scoring in two quarters, winning 56-49 in a much tighter game than the previous day. Once again Mobley and Sullivan led with big contributions from Drew Drake and Ethan Quinn, making the Cowboys hard to defend as they fired on all cylinders.
They now look to Florence on Friday evening. The Huskies come into Meeker with a 9-13 overall record and ranked 26th, led by two seniors Goodall and Phillips.
The winner of the game will take on the winner of Banning Lewis and Montezuma-Cortez for the final shot at making it to state. Banning Lewis is favored to win their opening game with an 18-4 record and ranked in eighth in the state, just above Meeker three spots. Meeker is hosting regionals over Banning Lewis as they won districts and will work to secure a spot in the state tournament with their home court advantage.
