MEEKER | The Meeker High School girls golf team continued to build experience and consistency through a busy mid-season stretch, competing in two tournaments over the past two weeks.
The Cowboys opened the run at the Demon Invitational on April 15 at River Valley Ranch Golf Course, where junior Aurora Stallings led Meeker with a round of 120 (+48). Freshman MacKenzie Denney followed with a 132 (+60), while sophomore Althea Halstead carded a 135 (+63). Freshman Alexandria Trout added a 144 (+72), and freshman Gracelynn Vierra competed as an additional player, shooting a 134 (+62).
Meeker continued its schedule April 20 at the GJHS Tiger Open at Bookcliff Country Club. Junior Liliana Hernandez paced the Cowboys with a 110 (+39), the lowest individual round for Meeker across the two-tournament stretch. Stallings and junior Kailynn Watson each shot 125 (+54), while Halstead posted a 129 (+58) as Meeker finished 11th as a team.
Across both events, the Cowboys showed steady development, with players gaining competitive experience and several posting consistent rounds through a demanding stretch of the schedule. The midseason portion has featured a mix of experienced upperclassmen and underclassmen continuing to adjust to varsity competition.
Head coach Amanda Back said the team’s recent performances have reflected clear improvement across the lineup.
“The girls have done awesome. Lili, Aurora, Kailynn and Althea have had their best rounds in the last two tournaments,” Back said.
Back said the team’s progress is becoming more noticeable as the season continues.
“Everything is starting to click and come together nicely,” she said.
She pointed to Hernandez’s performance at the Tiger Open as a key example of that development.
“She locked in and had a goal and achieved it,” Back said.
Back also praised the leadership of Stallings and Watson as the season has progressed.
“Their leadership has been awesome and they are working very hard to be the best leaders,” she said.
Overall, Back said the mix of experienced players and younger athletes has blended well.
“Very well,” she said.
Looking ahead, Back said she expects continued consistency at the Rifle tournament before a quick turnaround to Cedaredge.
“Keep the pace and having another set of great rounds,” she said.
She emphasized maintaining a positive mindset through the stretch of back-to-back events.
“Mindset, grind—they got this,” Back said.
Back also noted Cedaredge will present a difficult finish.
“Cedaredge back nine is very challenging. I know they will do fantastic,” she said.
She added that the team’s focus between tournaments is staying mentally ready and prepared.
“Improvement from one tournament to the next,” Back said.
Halstead said competing in both scramble and individual formats has helped her develop different parts of her game.
“Competing in both scramble and individual tournaments has helped me in different ways,” Halstead said. “The scramble format taught me how to work with teammates and stay positive, while individual tournaments have pushed me to stay focused and accountable for every shot.”
Watson said her most recent round did not fully match her expectations, but she remained consistent throughout.
“My score was not exactly how I wished it to be, but I stayed pretty consistent throughout the round,” Watson said.
Stallings said improvement in her short game and mental approach has been key this season.
“My short game has improved a lot compared to earlier in the season,” Stallings said. “I really focused on my mindset. Instead of getting frustrated after a bad shot, I tried to stay present.”
Junior Liliana Hernandez and Stallings have consistently led Meeker’s scoring efforts, while Denney has emerged as a steady contributor in her freshman season. Additional players, including Halstead, Trout, and Vierra, have added depth and experience to the roster.
As the season progresses, the Cowboys will continue focusing on consistency, course management, and short-game improvement as they work toward the latter portion of the schedule and postseason goals.
Meeker will return to competition April 27 at Rifle at 11 a.m. before closing the month April 30 at Cedaredge at 10 a.m.
