MEEKER | On April 30, the Meeker High School Scholastia Chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 22 new members at a ceremony in the MHS auditorium.
The National Association of Secondary School Principals met in Omaha, Hawai’i in 1919 and pushed for an organization that recognized well-rounded students who excelled in athletics, academics, and other service activities. As a result, NHS was established in 1921.
National Honor Society’s notable alumni include Fred Rogers from the television program “Mr. Rogers,” cartoon artist Jim Davis, actresses Tina Fey and Meryl Streep, and late President Gerald Ford. MHS chartered its own chapter of NHS in 1959.
Nationally, NHS members must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. However, Meeker High School elevated the standards for its local chapter. Sophomores must have a minimum GPA of 3.75; juniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.5; and seniors must have a minimum GPA of 3.2. Students are invited to apply based on their GPA.
The four “pillars” of the organization are character, scholarship, leadership and service. Students must demonstrate excellence in all four of these categories within their application to NHS in order for the Principal’s Advisory Committee to accept their application. Some members are accepted on a probationary basis, meaning they must show growth in their community involvement during their first year of membership.
New inductees include seniors Jonathan Fitzgibbons and Celine Lozono-Garay; juniors Reese Clatterbaugh, Alejandra Garcia, Taylor Garcia, Carson Klinzmann, Landin Lopez, Roxanna Lopez-Rodriguez and Adison Selle; and sophomores Emma Bauer, Jacey Follman, Hayden Garcia, Holton Harvey, Morgan Keetch, Sidney Keetch, Addison Knowles, Lilly Newman, Liliana Piper, Braydin Raley, Rylee Sullivan and Leah Wood.
These students have shown their capability for great success by obtaining membership in the Scholastia Chapter of National Honor Society in Meeker High School.
