MEEKER | The Meeker Mustang Makeover was pleased to be awarded $2,500 from the Western Colorado Community Foundation (WCCF) as part of their 2024 Community Grants; Youth Outside and Offline. We are proud to be chosen as one of 14 organizations receiving this funding which totaled $125,000 across western Colorado.
“This funding will help us reach more young trainers and give them the skills needed to train mustangs, while building trust, discipline and a greater knowledge of and interest in our western heritage”, explained Deirdre Macnab, president of the board.
The mission of the Meeker Mustang Makeover which is in its sixth year is to find safe and productive forever homes for mustangs in captivity, with a focus on wild horses from our local area, to work with our local White River BLM office toward a sustainable herd size. The Makeover provides free clinics for youth and all trainers to help build their natural horsemanship skills and the unique approaches when dealing with a wild untouched horse. The Makeover board is a non-profit 501c3 and has a hard working board who loves horses and works year round to put this event, which brings many new visitors to Rio Blanco County.
This year’s event is Aug. 23-24 at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds in Meeker. The Westernaires, an historic drill and trick riding team from Golden, Colorado, will perform this year at the half time just prior to the flag ceremony. The competition will start at 9 a.m. on Aug. 24 with the horses auctioned off at 7 p.m. The night before, Aug. 23, features a western gala, the Mustang Mingle at the 4-H building at 6 p.m., live music by the Eighth Street Pickers, a delicious barbecue dinner by the Little Pink Truck, silent auction, a fun tablescape competition and more for $35 (Kids 12 and under $12.50). Mustang Margaritas and full bar by the Meeker Lions Club. The public is invited.
